《當代懷疑論者》雜誌社的資深編輯漢克是個酷愛冒險的人，二十年來一直在追蹤各種不同尋常的線索，曝光真相，揭露陰謀。漢克年輕美貌的妻子萊拉從地攤上購買的一塊古董後竟然離奇從工作的古董鐘錶店被人綁架。兇徒文森特以萊拉的性命作要挾，要求漢克交出古董鐘。漢克拆卸古董鐘錶後，意外發現藏在其中的一張藏寶地圖。然而這張藏寶圖不能給人帶來財富，而是指引著一個巨大的災難。現在只有漢克能破譯圖上的古怪符號並找出隱藏在其中的秘密，確保這些資訊不落入壞人之手。在年輕同事及一名性感的 FBI 女探員的幫助下，漢克將竭盡全力找到自己的妻子，並追查實情的真相……
